The submachine was developed by a team of designers (R. Stadler, George Hyde from Fire**** Research Corporation and engineer Frederick Simson from the Inland Manufacturing Division of General Motors Corporation) as a cheaper and more technologically advanced weapon to replace the Thompson submachine . A year earlier, at the same enterprise, the M2 Hyde submachine developed by George Hyde was already designed and produced by an experimental batch, which was recognized as inferior to the new model in a number of parameters.
